PLAYERS’ CORNER

Maria Martianez on the addition of  her high school teammates “Mo” Brotons and Maria Marti.

“They are my little sisters. I need to take care of them,  but it’s really good to have them,” said Maria Martianez. “If one day I need to speak in Catalan because I need it they’re there to help me. We help each other out.”

THOUGHTS FROM COACH CUSSEN

“The returners have all come back better, stronger, more focused and more mature. What that has created is a stronger platform for the new players to come in.”
“The greatest strength of this team is their chemistry. None of them care who gets the credit. That could turn out to be our greatest weakness, because we do so much looking for each other. Sometimes I need them to be more selfish at times. So it’s a bit of both.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Montserrat Brotons and Maria Marti

Brotons and Marti are the second wave of Spanish players to join the team in two years. They were teammates with Maria Martianez at Instituto Joaquim Blume in Spain. The girls have the athleticism of smaller guards even though both stand over 6-foot-3. If they can have the impact Martianez did in her first season, it could mean great things for Coach Cussen’s squad.

Lakota Beatty

Beatty will finally get to suit up for the Golden Eagles after sitting out all of last season. The Oklahoma State transfer adds stability and experience to an already-deep backcourt, and teaming up with her sister again should take the pressure off. Don’t be surprised to see Beatty play big minutes this season.
