The Golden Eagles women’s soccer team finished the weekend at home with a 3-1 senior day victory over South Dakota at the Case Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. ORU is now 9-9-1 overall and 4-3 in Summit League play.
This was ORU’s fourth consecutive win in conference competition, with one game remaining in the season.
South Dakota came into the game ready to play, with its only goal of the game being scored five minutes into the first half by Kellee Willer.
Despite a slow first half which left the Golden Eagles down 1-0 at half time, Alexia Herrera netted the equalizer for the Golden Eagles in the 75th minute, when the ball was served into the box by Tahlor Lyman.
Two more goals were scored by ORU shortly after during the 79th and 84th minutes of the game. Both goals came from Sierra Beall with an assist from Lyman on both.
Lyman had a total of three assists for the match.
Herrera and Lyman, both seniors, were excited about the win in their last home game as Golden Eagles.
Lyman had a strong statistical game, but her focus remained on her team and doing what she could to help push her team to be the best they could be.
“We came out at half time down and we knew what we had to do,” said Lyman. “We realize we were going to have to believe in ourselves in our hearts and keep moving forward, pushing each other to do better.”
Herrera echoed a similar sentiment, even though her goal led to two more for the Golden Eagles being scored within 10 minutes.
“It was a great team effort,” said Herrera. “We kept our heads up and kept fighting for what we knew was ours.”
Herrera has five goals for the season, and Lyman has two goals and three assists.
ORU out shot South Dakota 24-5, with eight of ORU’s shots being on goal.
Next Sunday ORU will travel to play Western Illinois at 12 p.m. in its final game of the season. The Golden Eagles hope to win and secure a spot in the conference tournament.
