It seems the theme of the Oral Roberts men’s soccer team this season has been late goal scoring and overtimes. The trend continued on Monday night.
Marco Hernandez scored a goal with two minutes left in the match, and Griffith Poindexter scored on a header in the second overtime to lift the Golden Eagles over Central Arkansas.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles are now 6-6-3 on the season.
“It’s the first time we’ve been .500 since 2009 and that’s awesome,” said ORU striker Johnny Chavez. “I’m really proud of the way the guys played tonight.”
The game started slow for the Golden Eagles, who were outshot in the first half 10-3 and went into the locker room trailing 1-0.
Central Arkansas jumped out to a lead when Taylor Hart scored in the 19th minute.
The second half was mostly controlled by ORU, who missed out on several goal attempts until Hernandez was able to score after Gerardo Salas’ free kick bounced right to him in the box.
The first overtime was mostly uneventful except for a diving save by ORU goalie Isaac Sandoval, who is now 3-2-1 on the year after taking over for injured goalie Ben LaCourse.
The second overtime was short but exciting.
Johnny Chavez took the ball of the kickoff down the right side of the field and sent a cross to Griff Poindexter who jumped and headed it in. The goal took 16 seconds off the clock, and Central Arkansas didn’t even touch the ball.
Saturday night is Senior Night for the Golden Eagles. They face Denver at 8 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
