The ORU baseball team was in cruise control from the first pitch as they defeated UALR 14-5 on Friday afternoon.
Catcher Matt Whatley started the scoring for the Golden Eagles with an RBI-single to center field in the first inning. Infielders Mason Mantle and Trevin Sonnier added a pair of RBI-singles to give ORU an early 4-0 lead.
“Guys came out swinging it well,” said Whatley. “We’ve been struggling a little bit with our two out approach and guys did a nice job on that today.”
Whatley led the Golden Eagles at the plate. He finished the day going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. The Golden Eagles scored runs in seven different innings including five runs in the third to put the game out of reach. Nine of 11 finished with at least one base hit.
“Seven two-out RBI today. I thought that was the key to the game.” said ORU Head Baseball Coach Ryan Folmar. “We’ve had times where we have been good with two outs and we’ve had times where we’ve struggled with two outs. We were good today and that was the difference.”
Starter Bryce Howe earned his first victory of the season for ORU. Howe threw six strong innings allowing three earned runs off of six hits. He struck out one batter and walked two.
Golden Eagles get back to .500 with their win today and now have a record of 4-4 on the season.
“At Arkansas we started slow, but it was nice to pick up the series win at DBU,” said Whatley. “I think that [series] got us on the right foot.”
The next game for ORU will be tomorrow afternoon when the Golden Eagles take on UALR in a doubleheader. Nick Wood will get the start in Game 1 for ORU. Logan Michaels will get the nod in Game 2. Game 1 will begin at 2 p.m. and Game 2 will begin approximately30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
