ORU’s baseball team scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to push past Memphis and win their first game of the season, 3-1.
It was the first opening day win for ORU since 2011.
The game looked to be getting away from the Golden Eagles, who couldn’t seem to find a way to generate any offense.
Rolando Martinez came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and hit a clutch two-out RBI double off the wall in left to score Anthony Sequeira from 2nd base.
After Nathan Garza pitched a scoreless 8th inning, Logan Domenico led off with a single, and was moved to 2nd base on a Chase Stafford sacrifice bunt.
Audie Afenir lined a two-out RBI double off the warning track in right to score Domenico and give the Golden Eagles the league. Sequeira added an RBI single to give them some insurance.
“We got some big hits,” said Head Coach Ryan Folmar. “We got some hits late in the ballgame when we really needed them in some tough spots when we really needed them.”
Guillermo Trujillo gave the Golden Eagles a quality start. After a shaky first inning, Trujillo settled down. He finished the game going seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
“I thought Guillermo really settled into the game especially after the second inning,” Folmar said. “From innings three to seven, he was really good. We got some good hitting and good pitching. A pretty good recipe for success.”
The next game for the Golden Eagles will be against Memphis tomorrow at 11 a.m., which will be Game 1 of a back-to-back doubleheader. Game 2 of the doubleheader will start approximately 30 minutes after the end of Game 1.
