The ORU men’s soccer team and the Gonzaga Bulldogs played Friday, Sept. 14 at Case Soccer Complex. Amidst the Oklahoma heat and hoard of bugs, ORU left with the victory, 5-1, but not without a fight.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, ORU forward Junior Chavez scored a goal for ORU, putting the gold and blue in the lead 1-0. With 27 minutes left in the first half, the Bulldogs got a corner kick, which lead to an on-field scuffle. Minutes later, a shot on goal for the Golden Eagles was blocked by the Bulldogs’ goalie ending ORU’s momentum.
Right before halftime, each team had a run at the goal. Both runs ended with blocked shots and the first half ended with ORU leading 1-0.
When the second half started, ORU came in hot and ready to play. The Bulldogs and Golden Eagles exchanged tough and physical possessions finally leading to another ORU goal by sophomore Dante Brigida.
The last 15 minutes were charged with energy as ORU gunned for their 4th goal. Brigida scored again in the 80th minute. The score was 4 to 1 as Brigida recorded his first career hat trick.
In the last 10 minutes, the field was charged with physical attempts as the players scrambled for another score. In the 82nd, Brigida made another promising attempt but was tripped by the goalie. This gives ORU’s Junior Chavez a penalty kick who found the back of the net.
The game finished with a 5-1 blowout for ORU.
The Golden Eagles host Grand Canyon University on Sept. 17 at Case Soccer Complex. GCU currently holds a 3-2 record.
