With the game tied, Kaylan Mayberry found Christian Key, who drained a buzzer-beater three-pointer to give the ORU women’s basketball team an 81-78 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
“That was definitely a God thing,” Key said after the game. “I haven’t made a three in what feel like forever. I knew that we didn’t have a lot of time and [Kaylan] hit me. I just threw it up, and it went in. It was kind of awesome.”
Key was responsible for the last seven points that ORU scored in the game. Her jumper with 23 seconds left tied the game at 78.
A double-dribble by Elizabeth Styles of Southeastern Louisiana on the following possession gave ORU the ball.
Key was 0-4 from three-point range before hitting the final shot.
During the first half, it looked like ORU would have the game finished by halftime. About 10 minutes into the game, ORU held a 35-12 lead and at one point they were shooting over 70 percent.
Southeastern Louisiana was able to cut the deficit to 10 at the half after ORU made only one shot in the final six minutes of the half.
The Lady Lion comeback continued in the second half and they tied the game with 3:35 to play. They took the lead and led by four points with 1:10 to play.
At that point, Key took over and scored seven straight points to give ORU the victory.
ORU struggled with fouls the entire game. The Golden Eagles were called for 24 fouls while Southeastern Louisiana was only called for 11.
The Lady Lions shot 33 free throws compared to ORU’s two, tied for the lowest in ORU women’s basketball history.
Cussen said after the game that ORU’s aggressiveness early in the game started the large run of foul calls.
“There were a lot of times our post players early in the game were trying to block shots too much instead of playing good defense prior to their man receiving the ball,” Cussen said.
“We were responsible for the early part of that with our post play. But then it kind of turned into an avalanche of calls that just made the game really hard to play… When I see our post players making that extreme effort to go straight up and not body check and there are little touchy things that get called, that’s just a hard environment to put players into and it tightens them up.”
Kaylan Mayberry led the team with 21 points. Christian Key finished with 17 points and a career-high eight assists. Sarah Shelton had 14 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks.
ORU goes on the road for the next two games. The first comes on Thursday against Houston Baptist. The Golden Eagles defeated HBU 85-73 earlier this year at home.
