The ORU Golden Eagles closed out the regular season with an 11-2 home record as they defeated the Denver Pioneers 60-57 in a late-game thriller on Saturday night.
The win gave ORU sole possession of third-place in the Summit League Conference Tournament.
“I really proud of my guys,” said Coach Scott Sutton. “We knew this was going to be a battle, but I thought our guys really focused in and have come together. I’m really proud.”
ORU played exemplary defense for the second straight game, holding Denver to shooting below 50 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles also held Brett Olson, leading scorer for the Pioneers to seven on 2-9 shooting from the field.
“We’re starting to come together as a team,” said Aaron Young. “We are finally having fun out there. It starts in practice. We put more emphasis on our defense.”
Three different Golden Eagles scored in double-figures led by Obi Emegano with 25. Aaron Young scored 10 for ORU.
Senior Denell Henderson finished with 13 points in his final contest at the Mabee Center.
“I’ve seen things in him (Henderson), in these past two games that I haven’t seen all year,” said Sutton. “This is the right time for us to come together. If we can play like this when we get to Sioux Falls, we can make some noise.”
Scott Sutton and company now head to Sioux Falls for the conference tournament beginning on March 8.
