The Golden Eagles pushed past Western Illinois to win 3-2 tonight at the Case Soccer Complex. Tarik Salkicic scored the final goal in double overtime with 4:43 left to play.

The team is now 4-4-1 overall and 2-0 in Summit League play.

“I thought we played really well. We’re 2-0, so we’re in first place in the conference right now,” said Head Coach Ryan Bush. “I thought it was unfortunate the game went into overtime. Obviously, we lost three sitters in the first half. Just wide open shots, so that was a little frustrating, but the kids played hard, they persevered through it. I thought we were good defensively, we made a couple of mistakes that we probably won’t make again the rest of the season. But overall, it was a fantastic performance from our group.”

The Leathernecks scored the first goal of the game 18 minutes in to put them ahead.

Matthew Rogers responded in kind. He shot his first non-penalty kick of the season to tie up the game.

“I thought Matt Rogers had an exceptional game,” Bush said. “I thought he was unlucky not to finish the penalty kick, he was unlucky enough to not have two other goals than the one he scored, but I think he did an excellent job in possession. He was just very good all night.”

Western Illinois would score a second goal to take the lead after a missed ORU penalty kick, but Edgardo Mira sent a shot into the net 65 minutes in to tie the game once more.

Salkicic pushed the Golden Eagles past the Leathernecks in double overtime with his first career goal.

“It’s always a tight race between us and Western Illinois,” said Bush. “They have a great program. They’re well-coached and well-organized, but we’re home at the Case Soccer Complex and we expect to win at home. I honestly expected to win the game in regulation, but we’ll take it any way we can get it.”

The Golden Eagles will take a break from conference play and head to Central Arkansas Tuesday. They will resume Summit League action Saturday, Oct. 10 against Denver at the Case Soccer Complex.
