The ORU men’s soccer team lost on the road, 4-0, Saturday night to Denver in the first game of Summit League play.
The Pioneers, defending Summit League champions, proved to be a tough opponent for the Golden Eagles and started their mission to defend their league title with a strong start against ORU.
Denver’s Brian Hoyt scored the first of his two goals off an assist by Sam Hamilton and Kosta Kordistos in the 24th minute to put the Pioneers up 1-0. ORU’s defense held up the rest of the first half holding the Pioneers lead to just 1-0.
However, the Golden Eagles struggled to find its equalizer before halftime. Their only opportunity was a missed shot by Matthew Rogers. The miss would be the only shot ORU attempted in the first half and the Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 at the break.
Casey and Corey Cantor were both able to get one shot each for the Golden Eagles in the second half but with no score.
The Pioneers began to pull away in the game when Reid Hukari scored his first goal of the season for the team in the 52nd minute. After a little more than 63 minutes of play, Denver’s Kosta Kordistos and Alex Underwood found Brian Hoyt again to assist on his second goal of the night and give Denver a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers would finish off their scorching night with Karsten Hanlin scoring his second goal of the season assisted by Cole Stevenson in the 82nd minute putting his team up 4-0.
ORU was out-shot by Denver 16-3. Denver goalkeeper Oliver Brown recorded another save to improve his record to 5-1-0 on the year.
The win puts Denver at 6-3 for the year and 1-0 in the Summit League. ORU drops to 0-1 in the Summit League and 3-3-1 for the year. ORU has now lost all six meetings against Denver.
The Golden Eagles will look to rebound at home Tuesday night, September 30th against Incarnate Word at the Case Soccer Complex at 6 p.m. CST.
