The Golden Eagles didn’t make things easy for themselves Saturday afternoon as IUPUI took advantage of ORU’s costly mistakes.
Four early fouls by ORU put the Jaguars in the bonus. IUPUI went to the free throw line 22 times in the game, making 18 of those attempts. The Golden Eagles weren’t as fortunate only going 7-12 from the stripe.
“Putting a team in the bonus makes you sit back on your heels,” said guard Kaylan Mayberry. “It forces you to not be as aggressive or use your hands as much.”
ORU also turned the ball over 16 times leading to 16 IUPUI points.
Guard Danielle Lawrence led the way for the Jaguars. Lawrence scored a game-high 23 points. She also knocked down 10 free throws including three key shots in the fourth quarter.
“We just didn’t [play] with as much intensity as IUPUI today”said head coach Misti Cussen. “We showed some life in the last three to four minutes. We aren’t putting as much intensity on the first three quarters as we are the last five minutes of a game.
The Golden Eagles received a solid effort from Mayberry. She scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Forward Maria Martianez finished the game with 11 points.
“There are a lot of good pieces that are there for us,” said Cussen. “We’re not all the way in 5th gear yet. We’re hanging out in 4th for 30 minutes [of the game]. But it’s there.”
The next home game for ORU will be Thursday, February 4 when the Golden Eagles take on North Dakota State at the Mabee Center. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M..
