ORU comes up short at home

Oral Roberts suffered its second straight home loss, falling 87-83 to the Devils of Northwestern State.

ORU was led by career highs from Korey Billbury (29) and Shawn Glover (32) while Jalen West (18) and DeQuan Hicks (17) paced the Devils. The loss brings ORU’s overall record to 10-10 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.

Northwestern State controlled much of the first half behind a hot shooting start from the field, but ORU had an answer finishing the first half on an 11-3 run to take a 41-39 lead into the break.

Korey Billbury, whose previous career high was 21, had 19 points on a scorching 70 percent shooting from the field in 18 minutes of play.

Northwestern State built and maintained a lead for much of the second half. The Golden Eagles clawed back and had a chance to tie with 7.6 seconds remaining. Shawn Glover came around a screen and elevated for a three-point shot that fell short, sealing the win for the conference preseason favorite.

The Devils shot 44 percent from the three-point line in the second half and forced 16 Golden Eagle turnovers.

“When you shoot 50 percent from the field, 75 percent form the line and out-rebound a team you shouldn’t lose at home,” said Coach Scott Sutton. “That shows a lack of defense and too many turnovers. We had really bad, momentum-turning turnovers.”

ORU will now look to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in the conference and get better.

“We’ll be back at it at 5 a.m. Monday morning.” Sutton said. “The guys that want to get better will be there.”

ORU will face Nicholls State on January 30 at 8 p.m. on ESPN3.
