The Golden Eagles were dominant in their home opener Friday night, sweeping South Dakota State 3-0.
The easier sets for the Golden Eagles were the first and second set. The team came out of the gate strong. They won the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-15. Everything was clicking for them.
In the third set, the Golden Eagles were a little sluggish. South Dakota State led a lot of the set, but ORU was able to rally back with the help of senior Sara Pope. Pope finished the game with 20 kills.
“She is our motor of the team,” Head Coach Sheera Sirola said. “Think of it like a car, if your engine doesn’t work the teams doesn’t work. But at the same time she cannot play by herself.”
The student body came out to support the team in a big way. The team fed off the crowd’s energy all night.
“The energy was great,” Pope said. “They kept the intensity up for us and it was a great help. The fans were on fire, and it made us come closer as a team and communicate.”
The Golden Eagles improved to 7-7 on the season and they are now 1-0 in the conference.
This weekend ORU will go on the road to face South Dakota on Sunday and then face Denver on Monday.
The next home match for ORU will be Sunday, October 5th at 1pm when the Golden Eagles will face IUPUI at the Aerobics Center.
