The ORU men’s soccer team shutout Eastern Illinois 5-0 at the Case Soccer Complex on senior night to earn a share of the Summit League regular season title. ORU relentlessly attacked the Panthers from the beginning of the game and never looked back.
The team was not bothered by the cold temperatures at all Saturday night.
Head coach Ryan Bush said the game plan was to have high intensity and performance within the first 30-minutes of the game.
“We told the guys we want to high press all over the field,” Bush said. “We told them we wanted two or three goals by 30 minutes in and they finished with three goals 30 minutes in”.
Senior Johnny Chavez started the hot night for ORU, scoring his ninth goal of the season seven minutes into play. Matthew Rogers and Edgardo Mira assisted on the goal.
Mira then scored his third goal of the season 10 minutes later, assisted by Tarik Salkicic.
With the Golden Eagles up two goals in the 25th minute, Salkicic earned a penalty kick. He coverted for his third goal on the year and comfortably put ORU ahead 3-0 with plenty of time left in the 1st half.
Chavez took adavntage of that time and in the 33rd minute connected on his second goal to give ORU a 4-0 lead going into halftime. The performance made Chavez’s senior night one to remember.
Mira also got his third assist in the game when Matthew Rogers scored in the 55th minute of play. ORU would cruise to a 5-0 lead following the goal by Rogers.
The loss put EIU at 3-13-1 on the season. In addition to the seniors winning their final home game at ORU, the win officially sends them to Denver next week for the conference championship tournament.
Denver defeated Western Illinois to create a four way tie at the top of the standings. ORU, Denver, Western Illinois and Omaha all finished the regular season at 3-2-1 and share the regular season championship.
ORU finishes the season 8-7-2, their best regular season record since finishing 9-4 in 2005.
Next Saturday, the Golden Eagles will take part in the Summit League postseason championship. On Thursday, Nov. 13, ORU faces Western Illinois in the semifinal round of the tournament at 4:00 p.m.
