The ORU volleyball team came out swinging Saturday against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats. ORU was coming off its first conference victory against Incarnate Word and kept it rolling against the Wildcats.
The first set was very tight. Both teams defended well and which made for long volleys and few opportunities for mistake. After a few clutch kills by junior Sara Pope, ORU pulled out 25-21.
ORU handled the second set well, winning 25-16. After ORU took control of the net, freshman McKenna Qualls served a couple aces and ORU’s defense blocked well and allowed very few Wildcat attacks to succeed.
After the intermission, ACU took the court fired up, looking for a set.
Both the Golden Eagles and the Wildcats attacked aggressively, but ORU’s Sara Pope, Luara Rosa and Jessica Pancratz held the net down defensively. ORU took the set and match 25-20.
Junior Sara Pope established a presence early and posted 17 kills against the Wildcats.
Freshman McKenna Qualls had a stellar performance on all parts of the court.
Head Coach Sheera Sirola said Qualls has been excellent “from the first day” and “from this point on she can only get better.”
Coach Sirola said that it “feels good to have the first two [conference] wins.”
Coach Sirola believes that the two home wins help “the girls feel more confident,” which will help as the ORU volleyball team hits the road for their next two matches.
ORU volleyball’s next two matches are away at New Orleans and Southern Louisiana on 9/26 and 9/28. Look for the next home game on 10/3 versus Stephen F. Austin.
