The Oral Roberts University Men’s soccer team’s season came to an end following the Summit League semifinal match. They lost to Western Illinois University Friday afternoon 2-1.
It was the third time in four years that Western Illinois defeated ORU in the Summit League semifinal match.
The unfavorable weather conditions of low temperatures and a wet field made for a tough game, causing constant footing slips for both teams.
WIU’s Yves Dietrich and ORU’s Ben LaCourse both had diving saves early in the game.
The Leathernecks struck first in the 11th minute on a goal by Fernando Pacheco, his first goal of the season. He was assisted by Ben Fiddes.
The Golden Eagles came out strong offensively in the second half. They fired 10 shots on goal, eight coming in the final 37 minutes. Johnny Chavez took an ORU season-high of six shots total in the game.
WUI received a yellow card in the 78th minute after Dietrich aggressively approached Matthew Rodgers, pushed him from behind and swung an elbow at him but didn’t make contact. Chavez also received a yellow card for reacting and pushing Dietrich.
Western Illinois managed to score again in the 84th minute by Jacob Bevan. It was played to the left side of box shot from 15 yards out, assisted by Mario Alvarez and Maclean Johnson.
Both goalies performed well in the game. LaCourse (8-8-2) recorded seven saves and Dietrich (9-6-3) nine.
Griffith Poindexter scored the final goal from 10 yards out just as the horn sounded, ending Dietrich’s shutout and ending the game 2-1. It was Poindexter’s first goal of the season. Edgardo Mira assisted on the play.
ORU finished the season 8-8-2. It was the first time since 2005 that ORU had at least eight wins in a season.
