Volleyball finishes season with 3-0 win

ORU’s volleyball team finished their regular season with a 3-0 win over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon.

ORU finished the season with a 22-6 record overall and a 14-4 record in conference play.

The win came on senior night for the Golden Eagles, who honored the five seniors on the team.

Sthephanie Mab, Jessica Pancratz, Bruna Silva, Laura Taylor and Laura Rosa played their last home game for ORU.

“I told them to have fun and enjoy each other,” head coach Sheera Sirola said. “That it is the last time they are going to play at home and to make the best out of it… They’re going to be very, very, missed.”

“We just wanted to go out and have fun and I think we really accomplished that,” said senior Laura Taylor.

“It was pretty hard at the beginning,” said senior Bruna Silva. “The emotion was all over everybody, and everybody was crying. But I think we put everything together and played as a team, and I think we did [well].”

The first set was an easy win for ORU. Laura Taylor had three aces in the set as well as five digs. ORU attacked New Orleans from the start and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. They finished the set with another huge run to grab a 25-10 win.

The second set was much more difficult. ORU trailed for most of the set and was down 24-21. Back to back kills by Sadie Schaffner along with two New Orleans errors tied up the set at 24. After a timeout, ORU quickly finished the set with a Laura Taylor ace and another Schaffner kill.

The third set was another easy one for ORU. The Golden Eagles grabbed an 8-1 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-15. Sara Pope had five kills in the set.

Silva had 13 digs in her final home game. Fellow seniors Mab, Pancratz and Rosa also contributed in their final game at home. Mab had three digs, while Pancratz and Rosa both had three kills.

ORU will hold either the third or fourth seed for the Southland Conference Tournament. The seedings and first round matchups have yet to be announced by the conference.

The tournament starts Friday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
