Oral Roberts University participated in the Golden Hurricane Classic featuring Tulsa University and McNeese State this past weekend. The Golden Eagles split the games 1-1; the latter game ending a four game losing streak for the ladies.
Friday night, ORU played TU in a hard fought match that went into the fourth set, where TU ultimately defeated the Golden Eagles. Laura Milos led ORU with 15 kills, while Maggie DiPronio set a new career high with 22 digs.
After Tulsa won the first two sets, ORU stormed back winning the third 25-23. Sara Pope and Sadie Schaffner both tallied 5 kills each in the set.
“We didn’t play well in the first two sets, but we picked it up in the third”, said Head Coach Sheera Sirola in a post game interview.
ORU battled till the end in the fourth set, but lost 26-24 after two clutch kills by TU standout, Erica Bohannon.
“We just have to bounce back next game,” Sirola said.
Coaches words turned out to be prophetic as the ladies came out Saturday and swept McNeese State 3-0.
ORU established their dominance early starting the first set off with a 16-10 run. ORU cruised from there on their way to the victory.
Sara Pope showed her senior leadership once again by leading the team in kills tallying 14. Pope also had her fourth double-double of the season amassing 13 digs along with her kills.
Although the star players performed well, Sirola used her bench, giving Caroline Arnould and Sofia Redden valuable playtime. Arnould started for the second time this season and recorded a season high two kills, while Redden recorded three digs.
The Golden Eagles end their non-conference play with a 6-7 record. The ladies begin their Summit League Conference play at home on Friday, September 26 against South Dakota State. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
