Women’s basketball cruises over MSU

The ORU women’s basketball team used a strong second half to cruise to a 70-57 victory over Missouri State Monday night.

Vicky McIntyre led the way for ORU with 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks. She was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.

“I liked the tempo that Vicky played at tonight,” ORU Head Coach Misti Cussen said. “I felt against Tulsa she rushed things a little bit when she got shots. I felt like tonight, she had a real nice, methodical, on-balance feel to her shot. We started bringing her up into the high post a little more and she’s got great range in that area as well.”

McIntyre impacted the defense in more ways than just rebounding. Her presence inside the paint allows the guards to be more aggressive in their perimeter defense.

“It has my confidence really high,” Jordan Doyle, a freshman guard, said. “I know she has my back. If my girl gets past me, she’s there to help me and stop the layups and once we rotate, steals will come easy. I feel very confident that I have my 6-7 (player) behind me.”

Dorka Balla scored 16 points in her second straight game over 10 points. She hit four three-pointers in the game.

Faith Ihim had her best game of the season with eight points and 11 rebounds. With Detti Balla struggling with foul trouble, Ihim had to step into her role.

“I truly believe you’re going to continue to see Faith get better and better as the season goes along,” Cussen said. “She’s that pivotal position where we can put her wherever we need.”

“With Detti being in foul trouble tonight, Faith played a little more four (power forward) which was great because Missouri State went to a smaller lineup to get more shooters in. Faith can guard anybody athletically.”

The win evened ORU’s record at 2-2 on the verge of three road games in five days. On Wednesday, ORU travels to UALR. On Friday and Saturday the Golden Eagles will be participating in the Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament.

“I think UALR may be the best team left on our non-conference schedule,” Cussen said. “They’re extremely well coached. They’re very athletic. We don’t want to get in a transition game with them. We’re going to have to really try to play possession basketball in the half court and utilize Vicky.”
