Kaylan Mayberry and Blair Bryce carried the women’s basketball team in its 68-55 win against Western Illinois in the Summit League quarterfinals Sunday afternoon. ORU improved to 14-15 overall.
The Golden Eagle defense held the Leathernecks to shooting 23 percent from the field and 7 percent from three-point range to give them a 28-19 advantage going into halftime.
The team was able to stretch the lead in the second half scoring 40 points. The lead never dropped below double digits in the final 15 minutes of the game.
Mayberry went 13-17 from the field and 5-7 from downtown to score a career-high 33 points. She broke the record for most points by an ORU player in Summit League tournament and postseason play.
Bryce, while pulling down a team high 17 boards, also scored seven points and blocked four shots.
Sophie Reichelt and Michelle Maher led WIU in scoring with 15 points each. Reichelt also had 12 rebounds.
ORU had 18 turnovers, but made up for them by outrebounding the Leathernecks 47-37 and blocking eight shots.
The Golden Eagles advance to the Summit League tournament semifinals where they will face number one seed South Dakota. ORU was the only team to beat the Coyotes in regular season and they look to do it again.
