The ORU women’s basketball team sent their seniors off right with an 80-50 win over Sam Houston State.
It was the last home game in the careers of Christian Key and Sarah Shelton.
Key had 10 points and five assists in her final home game. Shelton grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
Freshmen Kaylan Mayberry and Dorottya Balla led the team with 17 points each.
ORU won with defense, holding SHSU to just 34.4%, while shooting 51% themselves.
The early minutes of the game were close but ORU quickly took over. An 11-2 run halfway through the first half gave the Golden Eagles a 10 point lead and they never looked back. They led 34-19 at half.
In the second half, ORU jumped out to a quick start. At one point, ORU was shooting over 80% to SHSU’s 20%.
The win improved ORU’s record to 8-8 in conference and put them eighth in the Southland standings. Only the top eight teams in the conference will make the Southland Tournament.
In the standings, ORU is a half-game ahead of Southeastern Louisiana, and a full game ahead of Houston Baptist. ORU trails Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Northwestern State, who are tied for 6th, by one game.
ORU goes on the road next week. They will face Stephen F. Austin on Thursday and Northwestern State on Saturday. If ORU wins both games, they will guarantee a spot in the tournament.
