The ORU women’s basketball team defeated North Dakota State 71-58 to win game one of the Summit League Tournament.
“It’s good to get our first win out of the way and be back in Sioux Falls again today,” Head Coach Misti Cussen said. “I was proud of the defensive effort. I was happy with the play of our top seven or eight kids. I thought we had some good key plays from some freshmen that came into the game.”
The Golden Eagles will face South Dakota State on Monday at 2:30 in the semifinal game.
Vicky McIntyre led the way for ORU with 18 points and 19 rebounds.
Faith Ihim scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Dorottya Balla had 11.
ORU’s defense continued its late season success.
“You cannot get comfortable with your lead,” McIntyre said. “You know we have to lock up our defense every play. We just have to not settle on offense and just play our game. If we give up points, it is all about our defense and that is the model that other teams do that win championships.”
ORU used a 16-3 run to propel them to a 37-26 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles had more than 50 rebounds for the second consecutive game. They outrebounded the Bison 51-38.
They outscored North Dakota State 36-22 in the paint.
ORU shifts its focus to South Dakota State. SDSU swept the Golden Eagles in the regular season.
On the other side of the bracket, South Dakota and IUPUI will play in the first semifinal game. The winners of the two games on Monday will play in the Summit League Championship game on Tuesday.
