It was a historic night for the wrong reasons Wednesday night as ORU lost to Arkansas 91-33.
ORU hasn’t lost by 60 points since 1993. That streak came close to being broken but stayed intact as the Golden Eagles lost by 58.
ORU had 36 turnovers in the loss but also had some positive showings from players.
Sarah Shelton continued to be a commanding force in the rebound department, grabbing seven boards in the game.
Christian Key led the team in scoring with seven points and also had four rebounds.
ORU fans shouldn’t be concerned about the team despite the poor showing on the road. Head Coach Misti Cussen said before the season that the team knows there are going to be rough patches in the early games.
“[The schedule] is specifically designed that way,” Cussen said. “It’s designed for us to get punched in the nose from time to time; for us to take our lumps and take our medicine from time to time; but there’s a toughness that develops in you [when you play hard teams].”
Cussen said the goal of the difficult schedule is to expose the problems in ORU’s game so the team can improve and be ready for the conference schedule.
“The season is so long in basketball that if you can expose some of your deficiencies early and address those you have time to really turn those into strengths by the time you get to the end of your season. That’s one of the things that playing a really good schedule like we did last year did for us and I believe will do for us again this year.”
ORU gets eight days off to regroup from the tough game. They return home for their next game against Navy on November 22. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
